Art: William & Evelyn De Morgan at The Laing Art Gallery – For NE Volume

Coming to the Laing Art Gallery this summer is an exhibition exploring the works of married couple William and Evelyn De Morgan who, according to Sir Edward Poynter, President of the Royal Academy, were “two of the rarest spirits of the age”.

Inspired by geometry, Islamic art and medieval design, William De Morgan was, without a doubt, the most prolific and innovative ceramic designer of the late 19th Century. The potter is renowned for his vibrant colours and designs to complement fashionable Victorian interior design.

The Laing’s Keeper of Art, Sarah Richardson, and Conservator, Ana Flynn-Young, also provide an online guided video tour of William De Morgan’s work which can be viewed on the gallery’s website which gives further insight into the artist’s creative process.

William De Morgan’s wife, Evelyn De Morgan, defied gender norms of the era, perusing a career in painting and strived to be acknowledged for her artistic skill rather than her gender. Although she took inspiration from Italian Renaissance painters such as Sandro Botticelli, Evelyn De Morgan established her own distinct style which reflected concerns over politics and World War One. Her peace paintings will be displayed in this exhibition as well as her preparatory sketches.

William and Evelyn De Morgan: ‘Two of the Rarest Spirits of the Age’ will exhibit at the Laing Art Gallery until Saturday 26th September. Visitors are encouraged to book online prior to visiting. Further information regarding the exhibition, booking details and COVID safety information can be found at laingartgallery.org.uk.
